It was our first time rehearsing the scene, so we began the
rehearsal by running through our lines. Natasha, who is playing Oliver (casting
choice), didn’t have her script with her - this lead to her telling Mrs. Culkin
she knew her lines, therefore Mrs. Culkin telling Raees and I that we were
being shown up by a year 7!
After we'd read through our lines, we blocked from the end of
act 2, scene 2 to the end of scene 3. As we went through the rehearsal, I
decided that I’d just put my script to one side as I kept losing the page
anyway: this meant I had a free hand.
Consequently, Mrs. Culkin was able to give me much more
direction that I could take. One thing I was asked to do was stumble and fall
when Bill flung me across the room. When we first rehearsed this, Mrs.
Culkin said it was amazing! I actually did fall though… However, I was able to replicate this - lucky I was, as we were told to "Take it from the fling" several times!
After almost an hour's hard work, Mrs. Culkin loved how the scene was looking and wanted to see what Raees and
I had worked on together the previous day. No - we didn’t quite remember the final decisions we had made; while we did remember
how we thought was best for certain characters to interact and communicate, we
had forgotten the seating arrangement! The arrangement was important as we had
set it up carefully in order to show that we were sat in a pub and avoid
crashing in to or frequently walking in front of each other as we moved around throughout the scene.
Anyway, the scene did go well in the end and, with Mrs. Culkin’s help, we were
able to amplify the tension and emotion within it!
The next rehearsal I had coming up was for 'Oom-Pah-Pah!' I couldn't wait!
