‘Oliver’ Diaries: Act 2, Scene 1 Rehearsal (22nd February 2018)

As it was after school on a Tuesday, Mrs. Culkin was holding a year 11 revision session so Frankie, who is playing Fagin; Ben, who is playing Dodger, and I rehearsed the part of the scene that was scheduled with Miss Bell (an English teacher in our school) in the hall.

The part of the scene we were rehearsing was what I had auditioned with, except some of the lines were slightly different. We ran through it a few times with our scripts, gradually figuring out how we should interact with each other and express our characters’ emotions. Miss Bell was really good at giving us direction in order to help the scene be more dramatic!

As the part of the scene we needed to rehearse was quite short, we still had a lot of time left afterwards; we used this to make sure we knew our lines enough to come off script.

For the last half of the rehearsal, we rehearsed without our scripts. As Nancy doesn’t talk during a lot of the part of act 2, scene 1 we were rehearsing, I was very focused on reacting. Though this had its challenges, I found that it usually came quite naturally.

Overall, the rehearsal went pretty well! We all knew our lines by the end of the hour, the boys’ characterisation was brilliant and I was told I was convincing too!

Before we left, we walked down to the Drama studio to let Mrs. Culkin know how we’d gotten on. I don’t think she was expecting us to be off script yet, judging by her reaction, but she seemed excited that we were!

I'll see you next time!
